No. When connected to the PC the unit is powered by the USB port of the PC.
| Unit will not power on.
- Replace with new battery.
- Make sure battery ends (+, -) line up with diagram in battery compartment.
- Make sure HOLD button is in the unlocked position
| How do I create folders for my files?
Files can be created on your computer with the MP3 player connected. Simply open the "Removable Disk" window and create folders inside this window. Files can then be transferred into specific folders.
| Can I put files other than MP3/WMA on my player?
Yes, the MP3 player can also be used as a portable storage device. Just drag and drop or copy and paste the desired files into the "Removable Disk" window. The player will display
only MP3/WMA files when turned on, but other files will be stored and can be accessed by plugging the unit back into the computer. |
| Where do I get MP3 and WMA files?
There are lots of different places to obtain MP3/WMA files: from music CD's, the internet, music download programs, etc.
You probably already have at least a few on your computer. Web sites such as www.mp3.com,
www.epitonic.com, and www.download.com
allow you to download free music or can point you in the right direction. |
| How do I copy music from an audio CD to my MP3 player?
First, the music from the CD must be transferred to your computer, a process called "ripping". Ripping the files can be done through music programs such as
Windows Media Player®, MusicMatch Jukebox®, Winamp®, etc. The audio tracks will be converted into MP3 or WMA tracks as they are being ripped to your computer.
Once the selected tracks have been successfully ripped, you can then transfer them to the MP3 player. Just select the ripped tracks you wish to put in the player,
and select the option "Copy to Device". Also, you can simply locate the tracks (usually found in the "My Music" folder on your computer) and copy and paste them
into the "Removable Disk" window.
| I ripped a CD using Windows Media Player, but the MP3 player will not play the songs I downloaded. Why?
Our players will play songs ripped from a CD, but only if the copy-protect feature is disabled. If you have never changed this setting in Windows Media Player, most likely the copy-protect feature is turned on.
To turn this setting off, first open Windows Media Player. In the menu, click on "Tools" and then "Options". Look for a tab that says "Rip Music" (recent versions) or "Copy Music" (earlier versions) and click on it.
Look for a check box next to "Copy protect music".
If this box is checked, then un check it by clicking on the box. Then click on "Apply" and then "OK". Turning the copy-protect feature off will only apply to CD’s that
you rip after changing the setting. You will need to rip previous CD’s again in order to play them on the MP3 player.
| Unit displays "No Music" or "File Error" after copying tunes to the player.
If your songs were purchased through a "pay-for-play" program, such as iTunes or Napster and they do show up in the "Removable Disk" window, they will not play on our MP3 players. These songs are copy-protected, meaning that they
will only work with certain MP3 players that support copy-protected music. Unfortunately, our players do not support these files.
| Why does the unit display "Starting..." then turn off? How do I solve this?
For models MP-3805/3828/3830. First, replace the battery with a fresh one. A low battery may not provide enough power to start the player completely. If this doesn’t work, then there most likely is a problem with the player’s firmware.
Download the firmware upgrade files here: Note: 935Kb file. If you have upgraded the firmware, and the problem still occurs, then contact customer service or
email us for further assistance. |
| No sound when playing files.
- Make sure the volume is turned up.
- Make sure the earphone is plugged securely into the player.
| Only the first 10 seconds of each song plays on my
MP-3805/3825/3830 before skipping to the next one. Why?
The MP3 player has an "intro" mode that scans each song for 10 seconds before moving on to the next one. To return to the regular mode, press the 'Mode'
button while a song is playing. Press it again to select "Repeat". Then, toggle over to "Normal" and press the 'Mode' button again. Toggle over to "Exit"
and you're finished - each song will now play normally. |
| How do I connect the unit to a PC?
Follow the layout below. This would be the same procedure for all MP3's and Voice Recorders with USB interface.
| My MP3 player has a built-in USB connector.
Should I plug the player directly into my computer or use the USB cord?
You can connect the device either way. The cord is useful
if your USB ports are in the back of your computer. The built-in USB connector gives you the convenience of not having to carry the cord with you if you are using multiple computers.
| What's on the CD packaged with the MP-3805/3825/3830?
The CD contains a driver program for using the MP3 player with Windows 98SE. If your computer's operating system
is Windows Me/2000/XP, you do not need to install this driver program. If you do not have the CD, you can download the driver files here: Note: 908Kb file. |
| Unit is not recognized when plugged into the USB port.
- For Win98, install the driver program located on the included CD. NOTE: The drivers included in the supplied CD are only for Win98 only!
- Shut down computer, plug player into USB port and restart computer.
| I have Windows 98, but the computer won't recognize my player even after installing the driver program on the disc. Why?
Your computer probably has the first edition of Windows 98, which is not compatible with our MP3 players. The unit is only compatible with Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP.
You can check your version of Windows by right-clicking the "My Computer" icon and clicking on "Properties". The first edition of Windows 98 is displayed as "4.10.1998".
If your computer has Windows 98SE, you have installed the driver program, but the player is still not being recognized - leave the player plugged in and restart your computer.

| How
long is the battery life?
The life of the batteries depends on a number of factors. First and foremost is the quality of
the batteries you are using. Be sure to select a high quality alkaline or Ni-MH rechargeable batteries. Using
a lower volume level, whenever possible and keeping the backlight panel off, when not needed, will assure maximum battery life.
Depending on how you are using the unit, your average battery life will be between 8 and 14 hours.
| What are
the best batteries to use?/Can I use Ni-Cd batteries?
High capacity alkaline batteries are recommended. Same capacity recommended for digital cameras and portable CD players.
Do not use no name or bargain type batteries. The bargain type batteries will work but will not provide long battery life
that the high capacity alkalines and rechargeable Ni-MH offer. Ni-Cd batteries can be used but this type of rechargeable battery
does not offer long battery life. Cold weather note: Lithium batteries are recommended for use in cold temperatures. Note: DO NOT to mix
battery types as this can damage the batteries.
| Is this unit waterproof?
Not really, because of the earphone and USB (where applicable) jacks that need to be open.
| What is an MP3?
MP3 is short for MPEG 1, Audio Layer 3. It is a digital audio file that has been compressed to as small a file as possible.
| What is WMA?
WMA stands for Windows Media Audio. It is Microsoft's alternative to a compressed audio file.
| What is Firmware?
Firmware is the operating system and software installed on a portable device. Whistler's MP3 players have upgradeable
firmware, which means the operating system can be updated to take advantage of future technology.
| What is Bit Rate?
Bit rate is the amount of space needed to hold a given length of music and is measured in kilobytes per second (kbps).
Higher bit rates provide better sound quality but create larger file sizes. The most common bit rate is 128 kbps,
which many find as the best compromise between sound quality and file size.
| How many songs can I load into my MP3 player?
It depends on the memory capacity of the player and the size of the song files. At 128 kpbs (the most common) bit rate, a general rule of
thumb is that 1 minute of audio takes up 1 megabyte (MB) of memory. If the average length of a song is 3 1/2 minutes, this will take up about
3.5 MB of memory. Using this example, Whistler's 128 MB units can hold about 36 songs, 256 MB units can hold about 72 songs.
